My name is Susan Muir and my journey with kava began with a conversation — and a spark of curiosity I couldn’t ignore.

A gentleman who had spent twenty years living in Vanuatu first introduced me to kava. He spoke of its traditions, its calming properties, and its deep cultural roots. Intrigued, I began researching — and the more I learned, the more I knew this plant had something meaningful to offer.

What truly moved me to act was watching the news. Seeing the way young people were treating police officers — the aggression, the hostility — troubled me deeply. I have always believed that a calmer society is a kinder one, and I wanted to be part of the solution.

It took two years to obtain my food licence to sell kava in Western Australia. I started out at the Subiaco Markets on a Saturday night, sharing this remarkable drink one cup at a time. When a permanent stall opportunity arose at the Fremantle Markets, I took it — and that’s where KavaSutra Kava Bar was truly born.

Since opening, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with people from all walks of life. I’ve supported individuals working through heavy substance use, those seeking a natural alternative to alcohol, and people navigating anxiety, depression, menopause, sleep difficulties, and anger. Kava has been a gentle, natural companion on many of those journeys — and being part of that has been deeply rewarding.

My passion is to bring kava to people right across Western Australia — metro and regional — through events, education, and honest conversation about its benefits. I believe kava has a real role to play in community wellbeing, and I’m here to share it.
